Day 5 epic camping trip
Today had us heading to an icon of the United States. The Grand Canyon draws people from all around the world, which is apparent once you hit the south rim. Half the fun was guessing what language the people around you were speaking. At one point I had a couple from France on my right and Japan on my left, with a few Aussies behind. You see, you can’t go to the Grand Canyon and sit quietly as you look across the vast chasm. Everyone has to say something!
We started at the south rim visitor center, hiked to Mather Point, followed the rim to the Geology Museum, and then finished up at Bright Angel Trailhead. Right as we arrived at Bright Angel, a wonderful Native American dance was about to start with details on the tribes in the area, what meaning the canyon has for the indigenous people, and how the 3 dancers and the elder singer / drummer were all related to the Navajo ‘Code Talkers’. For me, this was absolutely the highlight of the day. The following video contains some of their show and all of the background music was provided by this wonderful native player.
The Grand Canyon is spectacular in every respect. So much history, so much splendor. You can read about it and watch shows on TV, but until you see it in person you cannot fully understand the vastness.
FYI: Internet can be extremely hit or miss. These updates can take a very long time to upload, so as we venture out deeper into the wild expect less frequent updates and possibly multiple post in day when I have stable signal.
